What is painless, odorless, tasteless, invisible and… toxic? *Giveaway*

Answer: Noise-induced hearing loss!

Who would have thought right? Hear the World, a non-profit organization by hearing system manufacturer Phonak is aimed at raising awareness about hearing loss and its consequences. Contrary to popular belief, hearing loss is not just an issue for the elderly. In fact, there are close to six million people in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 44 with hearing loss, and more than one million are school age.

It is so important to take care of your hearing. If your going to concerts or anywhere that will have loud noises take ear plugs, anything to help protect your hearing.

My husband and his brother have their own band with a few friends and anytime they practice they use ear plugs, and any time I listen in on a practice I definitely use ear plugs.

While 30 million Americans, and 16% of the world’s population, live with hearing loss every day, only about 13% of family health practitioners include a hearing screening along with regularly scheduled annual physicals. Beyond the physical effects, hearing loss can often have a social and emotional impact as well in both children and adults alike – from classroom learning issues, to family life disruptions and reduced earning power.

Over the next few months I’ll be sharing tips and offering awesome giveaways to my readers about the importance of protecting your hearing and more information about Hear the World.

*I received a gift bag full of goodies as part of a campaign for Hear the World as a Hear the World online ambassador.

The present era has seen a marked rise in hearing difficulties. There are two main reasons for this:

The overall level of noise has risen hugely all over the world. Both at work and at home, everybody is subjected to numerous sources of noise. For example, tests have revealed that more than half of all MP3 players on the market can play music at a volume of more than 89 decibels – the noise level made by a passing car. Anyone who listens to music at this volume over a long period will suffer hearing damage.

    Vicki Wurgler says:

I read that according to a British study, 39 percent of 18 to 24 year olds listen to music for at least an hour a day at up to 105 decibels. This means they are subjecting their ears to a level of noise which they should not be tolerating for more than 25 minutes per week. It has been estimated that with this permanent overtaxing there is a danger of becoming deaf within about five years.

I learned hearing loss is the world’s most PREVENTABLE disability!

I can attest that losing your hearing is SO hard to deal with on a daily basis and IS a disability. Our family has genetic hearing loss but I often wonder if those with the worst loss have had it due to work situations, music, hobbies like hunting, etc. My brother had to have hearing aids in his late 20′s and my son is only 27 and has at LEAST a 40% loss, about the same I am now at 50. I am SO glad to see these ambassadors out there getting the word out!

    thanks so much!
