Ways to Keep Your Family and Household Healthy

At the end of the day, a healthy family is a happy family. This is why you should continually strive to create a healthy home environment for you and your family. There is more to healthy living than diet and nutrition. Your health starts in your household. Here is a list of ways to create a healthier home environment.

Ways to Keep your Family and Household Healthy

Incorporate More Organic Products into the Household

What many people fail to realize are the dangerous ingredients that many household products contain, including cleaning products, mattresses, and even your bedsheets, which is why many people are investing in soft bamboo sheets. Many fail to realize that people spend more time in their beds than any other interaction. Oftentimes, bedding will feature chemical ingredients, along with dyes and pesticides, which can cause skin and respiratory reactions. Bamboo sheets are more comfortable and safer for the environment.

Incorporate More Physical Activity

There is no other therapy or medicine that provides as many benefits as physical activity. This has been proven to prolong your life and prevent many chronic diseases. All it takes is performing 30 minutes of physical activity a day, which also has the ability to improve cardio-respiratory health, raise your metabolism, as well as help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. There are currently more than 360 million children between the ages of 5-19 either overweight or obese, which has risen 18% since 2016. Exercising can also be a fun activity that your entire family can take part in, such as hiking, swimming, or even a night out dancing.

Clean and Dust Regularly

Another way to keep a healthy household is by cleaning and dusting regularly. A clean household is a happy household. You should try to clean your home at least once a week to help remove bacteria, viruses, along with fungi and mold, which can lead to various illnesses such as dry cough, skin rashes, sore throat, and wheezing. Dusting regularly also helps reduce allergens which can irritate your nose, throat, and trigger asthma attacks. Sweeping, vacuuming, or dusting once a week will reduce dust mites, pet dander, and other allergens. Keeping your house clean will also reduce the likelihood of your home becoming infested with rodents or other pests, such as cockroaches and ants.

Have Your Home Tested

As most people know, lead paint and mold can lead to serious health problems such as brain damage, seizures, and even death. It is always a good idea to have your home tested. You should also consider having your home tested for radon gas. Radon gas is a radioactive gas that seeps through the soil and rock underneath your home. Radon gas can lead to cancer and other illnesses. The gas is completely odorless and colorless. You may need to have a professional come in and seal off the leak, which is common in a home with leaky windows or if your home has an older basement. You often buy a home test kit at most hardware and home improvement stores.

Filter Your Tap Water

When it comes to drinking water, there are a lot of options out there. These options include bottled, distilled, and alkaline, but a majority of people still drink tap water. If your family drinks tap water, you should consider investing in a water filter. Water filters are designed to remove harmful elements such as arsenic, aluminum, fluoride, and disinfection byproducts, such as chlorine. Chlorine is currently the most widely used chemical for disinfecting water.

Use Non-Toxic Cleaning Products

When performing spring cleaning, it’s always better to use non-toxic cleaning products or products made using organic ingredients. Non-toxic cleaning products are perfectly safe around children which is often a parent’s biggest concern.

Installing a Smoke Alarm

Installing a smoke alarm is generally considered one of the best and least expensive investments you can make. A smoke alarm provides an early warning to alert you in case of a fire. It can cut your chances of dying in a fire in half.

Invest In an Air Purifier

Poor air quality has become a rapidly growing problem in the United States, which includes the air we breathe inside our homes. An air purifier helps reduce allergens and other harmful contaminants. They can filter 99% of toxins from the air.
