TOMS Shoes

Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or going to school, these children are at risk:

  • A leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through bare feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases, and the long-term physical and cognitive harm they cause.
  • Wearing shoes also prevents feet from getting cuts and sores. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected.
  • Many times children can’t attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don’t have shoes, they don’t go to school. If they don’t receive an education, they don’t have the opportunity to realize their potential.

TOMS Shoes was founded on a simple premise: With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One. Using the purchasing power of individuals to benefit the greater good is what they are all about.

As of September 2010, TOMS has given over one million pairs of new shoes to children in need through Giving Partners around the world.

On April 5th 2011 TOMS Shoes held their One Day Without Shoes and asked everyone to go at some point in the day to not wear shoes. What a huge impact it had on so many lives.

I recently noticed my mother in law wearing the adorable black Glitter Shoes and I told her about the One for One. She said she loves the shoes so much she plans to buy more. She also loves the One for One Campaign.

I loved the Black Glitter so much I couldn’t wait for a pair for myself. As soon as I slipped them on I was in love. Not only are they comfortable but the fun glitter makes them “me”.

I’ll even admit last week I was out shopping and saw a tween girl wearing some TOM Shoes and I asked her if she knew the difference she made with her shoes and she proudly said, “yes, and by buying these shoes another pair was sent to a child in need”.

I love the amazing lesson you can teach your children with TOM Shoes. The TOMS mission transforms  customers into benefactors, which allows TOM Shoes to grow a truly sustainable business rather than depending on fundraising for support.

Next up is buying the girls each a pair of Tiny TOMS, and spreading the One for One campaign.
