Tailgating with Frito Lay *Giveaway*

October 13, 2009 by Amanda

Football season is finally here…and everyone knows that game day just isn’t complete without the ultimate tailgating party! Whether it’s with a group of friends huddled outside the stadium or the family gathered around the TV in the den, tasty food and snacks are essential to a “winning” tailgating experience.

Tailgating for most of us conjures images of greasy pizza and saucy wings. With a little vision and planning, you can score big by offering a menu that’s just as delicious but a bit better for you.

This coming week is the USC vs Notre Dame game, and although Hubby and my mother in law are flying to Chicago to see the game, I will be heading over to my inlaws to relax and enjoy the game with my father in law and family! It’s my job to bring some yummy snacks!

Fewer penalties, better tailgating…

We know few people go to tailgate parties for the veggie – it’s definitely a time to indulge and enjoy. But it doesn’t have to be a total eating catastrophe. At Frito-Lay, their portion control sizes make it easy to enjoy all your favorite treats – in moderation. And simple “tricks” like offering dips made with reduced-fat sour cream or that offer positive nutrition like salsa or guacamole, cooking with lean turkey meat and fat-free refried beans can cut hundreds of calories off your meals and still taste great for you and your hungry fans.

So what am I making for the game this weekend? My favorite 7 layer dip YUM!!!

Seven Layer Mexican Dip

  • 1 16 oz. can fat-free refried beans
  • 1 4 oz. can diced green chilies
  • 1 cup non-fat sour cream
  • 1 Tbsp. taco seasoning mix
  • 1 cup homemade guacamole or store-bought
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup shredded low-fat Monterey Jack or cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced black olives
  • 1/4 cup sliced green onions

In a food processor, pulse beans and chilies together. (Or you can skip this step if you have some homemade black bean dip on hand.) Spread into a 10-inch pie plate.

In a small bowl, mix together sour cream and taco seasoning mix. Spread over bean mixture. Layer the guacamole on next, followed by remaining ingredients in order. Serve with baked tostitos chips.

Spread one 15-ounce can of Hormel no-bean chili on top (I prefer half)

I’m not sure how healthy this is, but hubby makes a dip with two cans of chili, half of a large block of Velveeta cheese, and one pound smoked sausage, sliced. Simmer and stir until the cheese is good and melted. Eat with Tostitos chips.

I used reduced fat products in this recipe and it’s really yummy:

Mix a packet of taco seasoning with a can of refried beans and spread in a pie plate. Spread one cup of salsa over the beans and then cover with a small container of sour cream followed by an 8 oz package of shredded cheese. Sprinkle top with chopped tomatoes and green onions. Use Fritos Scoops to scoop up and enjoy the dip!

I make a healthy taco dip:
1 small can fritos refried beans
1 can pinto beans (15 oz)
1 16 oz container light sour cream
    1 packet taco seasoning
3 loosely packed cups of shredded lettuce
1 8oz package 2% shredded Mexican blend cheese (or cheddar)
1 pint cherry or grape tomatoes

    1 bag Fritos
    1 bag Tostitos
    1 bag BAKED Tostitos

I use one of the little cans of fritos refried beans and mix it with the can of pinto beans. Use a potato masher to break the beans up. Spread the bean mixture at the bottom of a 9×13 glass dish. Combine the light sour cream with the taco seasoning. Spread on top of the bean mixture. Sprinkle on a layer of 2% cheese. Add the lettuce on top of the cheese. Dice the tomatoes and put them on top!

Use your Fritos and Tostitos to dip!

you can also add: onions, olives, jalapenos, avocado, or any other veggies to spice this recipe up!

Our new favorite tailgating snack is we take a multi-grain wrap, add black bean and ground Turkey chili, low fat cheddar cheese and Frtio’s, wrap it all up and eat. So good, so filling and healthier with the low fat cheese, turkey instead of hamburger and the multi-grain wrap.
