For the past year we have been dealing with dry, flaky skin with Sarah (8) and after many, many dr. visits the Dr. has suggested we have food allergies and also her lotions/body wash could be making her skin worse.

I never thought that the skincare products we were using on her was the root to her rough skin, until Shelby (2) started with the same rough skin this past month. I instantly started searching what other skincare products I could use on both of my younger daughters and heard that Mustela Bébé is  a great option for babies, especially those with sensitive skin.

When I was asked to work with Mom Central I was excited because I have wanted to try out the  Mustela Bébé  on the girls and the Stretch Marks Oil Care for myself.

The very first things I started out with are the 2 in 1 hair and body wash on Shelby. I was pleased that there is NO added scents and it is Tear Free. It is Hypoallergenic and specially formulated to minimize the risk of allergic reactions which is so important to me on both of the younger kids.

Hydra Bébé Body Lotion quickly is becoming my favorite lotion for Shelby.  I know it says it can take up to three weeks to see a change, but after ne week I am alreadys seeing Shelby’s skin less irritated.

I also found that the Facial Wipes and Hydra-Stick are perfect for this Winter Season. While it is starting to warm up here in California Shelby is still dealing with that wind blown dry cheeks. The Hydra-Stick is helping keep her cheeks from cracking, and with all those runny noses the Wipes are perfect for everyone! Both items are perfect for my Diaper Bag.

Mustela, the number one baby care and stretch marks brand in Europe and a trusted name in skincare for over 60 years, recently reformulated their Mustela Bébé product line based on 10 years of skin research. Now featuring a patented, next generation protective ingredient, Avocado Perseose, the Mustela Bébé line helps protect skin starting at the earliest stages of life.

I also had the pleasure to interview Dr. Mona Gohara on Behalf of Mustela and love the answers. Below are my questions with the answers:

1. We all know that new moms and babies have sensitive skin, moms for sure have a lot of hormone changes those first few weeks after the baby is born. What are some ways to keep her skin protected while her body adjusts?

A:I often advise my patients that body after baby is a combination of lifestyle and products.

Lifestyle changes include exercise (squats at home can strengthen gluts and legs) while light weight training can strengthen the pectoralis muscle and give a little lift to the breasts. Dietary changes should include foods loaded with rich antioxidants (think green leafy vegetables and berries) to combat collagen and elastin breakdown. Minimize stress—find mommy time. Stress increases cortisol, which wreaks havoc on our skin.

For Product, consider Mustela Specific Support Bust. This product helps promote firmness and prevent loss of skin elasticity, which may occur after giving birth. It also strengthens skin elasticity and suppleness with Elastoregulator (a soy peptide derivative) which, combined with a wheat protein and Lupeol, contributes to increased resistance to changes in breast volume. Lastly, it ensures increased moisturizing with its silicium-enriched formulation, which helps regenerate and tone the epidermis.

2. New moms spend a lot of time with their newborn, lots of snuggles and skin time. What are some ingredients to look for when buying products for mom and baby? Gentle for the baby on mom’s skin?

A:  Look out for products infused with water, glycerin, ceramides, and you guessed it—avocado! Keep it simple!      Mustela recently reformulated its Bébé product range to include anew natural ingredient that is extracted from avocado, a known “super-fruit.” Avocado Perseose is a biomimetic ingredient that is perfectly compatible and works in harmony with baby’s skin, therefore maximizing tolerance and effectiveness. Studies done by Expanscience Laboratories, Mustela’s parent company, show that Avocado Perseose:

  • Reinforces the skin barrier (demonstrated by increased ceramides and involucrin)

  • Maintains hydration of the epidermis (demonstrated by increased water retention and cell binders)

  • Preserves the cellular resource (demonstrated by 80% of stem cell marker preservation of UV exposed cells treated with Avocado Perseose)

3. How often/frequent should mom be using lotion on herself and the baby?

A: At least after bath time and at least one other time a day. The diaper area should get special attention because it is constantly subject to irritation! In this case, apply as needed!

Aren’t the answers so useful? I didn’t realize as moms we should be using lotions at least after bath time. It makes sense to me though to help keep our skin and our baby’s skin hydrated.
