How to Stay Healthy and Happy When Plus-Size and Pregnant

Being pregnant and plus-sized does not equate to a high-risk pregnancy. We are often told about the risks of obesity and often doctors, and other medical practitioners fixate on body mass index; however, these are just a number, and not indicative of an unhealthy pregnancy. 

Here are a few pointers to make sure that you have a healthy and positive pregnancy.

Plus-Size Maternity Clothing

Self-image can be a real struggle, and how we dress can affect this. Feeling confident and good about ourselves can raise our self-esteem and keep us feeling positive. Pregnancy might be a concern for some, as they may worry about a lack of beautiful, stylish or suitable clothes. However, it is possible to look good throughout your pregnancy and in the postpartum period. More brands are coming to realise that there is a real need for good quality, fashionable and comfortable plus-size maternity clothing. These include dresses, leggings, jeans, skirts and tops. You should also look at the best nursing bras for large breasts ready for after the birth. Breastfeeding can be uncomfortable and making sure that you have suitable clothing can take away some of the awkwardness and discomfort.

Staying Healthy While Pregnant

Obviously, your health is of the utmost importance while you are pregnant. You may feel that your weight might be an issue to your health; however, it is crucial to understand that you should not attempt to diet while pregnant. Your baby needs nutrition, and your calorie intake should actually rise considerably as your pregnancy progresses. Trying to maintain a balanced diet is however essential to ensure that you are getting all of the right nutrients, and look for ways of getting plenty of protein, omega-3, calcium, iron and folic acid while trying to avoid empty calories and trans fats.

Pregnancy can be an emotionally difficult time, and many people may have a view of your weight. Some may even share this with you, and this can be crushing to hear. Try to surround yourself with positive people, who are not critical of you. You need to be around supportive and caring people. Join an antenatal class as you will get lots of support and help to prepare yourself for the birth; it is also an excellent opportunity to meet and befriend other expectant mothers, who will all have some shared experiences with you. 

Look for a doctor or OBGYN that are not judgmental of size, and who are positive and supportive. Having a positive and supportive professional will mean that you will be comfortable enough to ask for help when you need it the most.  

Looking after yourself should be the primary focus during your pregnancy, whatever size and shape you are, your body is beautiful and amazing, and you should take the time to appreciate it, and its ability to bring a new life into the world.
