Identify Your Space

Is there are an area in your home that doesn’t get used very often? The important thing is to find an office space that works for you and your family and can be personalized to meet your work needs.

Design Your Work Area

There are many things that can affect how efficient and comfortable you are when you work. Your work area has to be properly lit and at the right temperature. You may need to use a telephone. Are you going to need to move your chair to different areas? Choose coverings for your windows that allow you to control the light. These are just some of the things you need to think about when designing your work area.

Choose the Right Desk and Chair

When you’re working in your office, you’re going to spend a large proportion of your time sitting at your desk or work surface. Choose something and have it at a height that’s most suitable for doing your work. Your chair should also be comfortable, at the right height and provide adequate back and arm support for whatever type of work you’re doing. Do some research about ergonomic office furniture before you go shopping.

Proper Lighting is Essential

Proper lighting in your home office is important because it will help to reduce eye strain. Any lighting you have installed should be above your reading area, on the computer and behind you, to avoid any reflection off the computer monitor. To stop yourself from squinting place the monitor at a comfortable distance from your chair.

Think Minimalist

You want everything you need to be close at hand, but that doesn’t mean your office space needs to be cluttered. It might surprise you how much you can do without. If your office is cluttered, it’s going to be very distracting and will reduce your efficiency.

Make it a Fun Place to Be

Just because it’s your office doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Add some personal touches and lots of color to make the space more inviting. Choose a particular style and find window treatments, furniture, and patterns to match that style. Include lots of accessories such as artwork, photos, baskets and boxes for storage.

If you spend time planning your home office space, getting it organized and decorating it to express who you are, you’re going to enjoy it more, and your work will be better.
