How Do I Welcome My New Neighbor To The Neighborhood?

So you’ve already spotted the for sale sign next door now has a big fat SOLD across it so it won’t be long until you can expect new neighbors to be moving in. It’s always nice to welcome new neighbors to the area and its not only a nice gesture, but it’s a great way of helping them feel at ease with being in a new area.

Creating friendships with new neighbors can be beneficial in a number of ways, including the fact that it’ll provide security for both of your homes. Friendly neighbors never mind keeping an eye when they know you’re not going to be around. Have a look at these easy ways that you can welcome a new neighbor into the neighborhood.

Introductions

You should allow your neighbors a few days to settle before popping round to introduce yourself. Even if you are an eager bever it’s best to give them space and time to at least start to adjust to their new home. Try going around a day or two after and go over with your family and to introduce yourself. If you’re unsure of what to say, you could ask thins about children, pets, or what brought them to your neighborhood.

Offer Considerate Food

When you do go over to introduce yourself, it’s nice to take a treat or a welcome gift. You could think about taking around a house plant such as a Chinese Money Plant to say congratulations to their new home. Ordering online flowers is not only a nice touch for this but also birthdays, get well and engagement presents so look for an online florist that you like for regular use. You should always bear in mind that some people have food allergies, so you might want to steer clear of the cake or baked goods. Celiac disease, gluten allergies, or dairy sensitivity are more common than most people realize. Instead, why not think about a hamper basket with fruit and some useful information on the local area.

Lend A Helping Hand

A really nice idea for you to make a good impression with any new neighbors is to hustle together a group of existing neighbors to help on the day the moving truck appears. Not everyone will accept the help but either way, it gives you and other neighbors the opportunity to introduce yourself and this will help your neighbors to feel welcomed. It most certainly breaks the ice anyway.

Invite Them Round

As mentioned above you should give your neighbors a few days to settle into their new digs. Then pop round for a short introduction. You could either take the opportunity to invite them around for a dinner party or wait a few weeks and then invite them, either way, is a reasonable amount of time. It’s a good idea to invite two or three couples from the neighborhood as well so your new neighbors can meet more people.

Update Them On Local Neighbourhood Watch

It’s no secret that people want to feel safe in their neighborhood so it’s common for them to be curious about any watched that may take place. Often people will research this before moving and if you have a  watch that’s particularly active then this may be one of the reasons they chose to move into your area anyway. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea to share the details of your neighborhood watch program with them. You should give them information such as where the group meets, how often and the information on the sort of things you do. You can then invite them to participate in helping to make the neighborhood safe.

Neighbourhood Safety Directory

This isn’t something that every neighborhood will have but it is something that is useful. If you and your neighbors do this then it’s a good idea to put a list together of all the neighbors’ addresses and phone numbers. You may also think about including phone numbers for schools, doctors, government offices, and the police department. A great way of doing this is through email. This is particularly handy if they have children as parents often share contact details when children make friends, like a safety loop for knowing where the kids are playing.

Provide Local Information

When you move to a new area it can be really hard to know what are the best places to eat. Things to see and do, what the best jogging route is or even something simple like the nearest supermarket. You could put together a collection of takeout menus for your favorite restaurants that you know are good quality, provide information for the local gym, library locations, and even include a print out of where the nearest shops are, including the local corner store. If they have children it’s nice to consider offering the phone numbers for reliable babysitters.

Be Respectful Of Privacy

Unfortunately, not everyone is as friendly as we would like and you will sometimes come across people who just aren’t very friendly. It may be that they re genuinely private people or are the type of people who need longer to settle in before becoming friends with neighbors. If you don’t have much in common or your neighbors are private people the best you can do is, show kindness, but then remember to respect their privacy and simply keep it to a smile when you cross paths.

Moving to a new location be that in the city, suburbs or country is always going to a little uncomfortable and scary for anyone. When you offer your welcomes and great people with warmth, even if it is just a smile it can make all the difference to making people feel at home in their new destination. Just always remember everyone is different, but it’s always nice and exciting to meet people from all walks of life.
