Most of us love our gardens. It is wonderful to be able to step outside your door and get close to nature. Gardening is an extremely relaxing and fulfilling hobby, which is why so many of us enjoy it so much. But it can also be expensive, which for many is a big problem. Fortunately, as you will see there are plenty of ways to keep the cost down. Below, are some of my favourites.
Look after and fix your own gardening tools and equipment
Using the right tools and equipment makes things a lot easier. Cutting your lawn using a manually driven mower takes a long time, which is why most of us invest in an electric or petrol lawnmower. They turn what would otherwise be a back-breaking task into a joy. But you need to look after your mower. Oil it regularly, sharpen the blades and carry out an annual service. When you do that it cuts better and will last longer. But it will, at some point, break down. When that happens, go online, and order the replacement parts you need, find a lawnmower repair article, or video and get to work. You will learn a lot and save yourself a lot of money in the process. Lawnmowers and most other pieces of gardening equipment are not complex. Most people find that with a bit of time and patience they can carry out most repairs themselves.
Learn how to grow plants from seed
Raising plants from seeds can be tricky, but it is a skill that is well worth learning. It is far cheaper than buying plants from your local garden centre. This excellent article tells you everything you need to know.
Take cuttings and grow those
You can also take cuttings and grow them. Often, this method is far easier than growing plants from seed. If you ask politely, most people do not mind you taking cuttings from their garden. Some parks and public gardens even allow visitors to do it, but you should check before you do so.
Join a gardening club
If there is a gardening or allotment club near you, consider joining it. You will be able to get free advice about taking care of your garden. Including how to rescue sick plants without having to buy expensive products to do so.
Some clubs also offer you the opportunity to hire or simply borrow gardening equipment for a small fee. This has the potential to save you a lot of money. Using a borrowed rotavator to dig over your vegetable patch each year is a lot cheaper than contracting a gardening firm to do it for you.
The above are just a few suggestions. There are plenty of other ways to keep the cost of taking care of your garden down. To learn about more of them just go online and visit a few gardening forums.
