Borders *Giveaway*

On Sunday Hubby and I stopped off at Borders in Riverside CA to check out the toys and books for kids! After dealing with an unhappy rude manager we had our gift card and were on our way to check out the toys.

Borders has made finding the perfect toy or game easier for those looking for high-quality educational gifts. The bookseller recently expanded its toys & games selection in more than 500 stores.  Shelves are stocked with items from leading brands like Creativity for Kids, Thinkfun, Scientific Explorer, ALEX and Blue Orange Games. These brands are known for products that foster creativity and help to build cognitive skills in children.

I’d say the girls and I spent a good hour in the kid section. When you walk into it, it’s like it has it’s own room. Kids have their own place to sit, relax and enjoy reading.  As you cna see from the picture below the Borders near us has a wonderful selection of books and toys! When I told the girls we had $100 o spend on books they were ecstatic! Samantha is a great little reader. She is at level 18 right now and has just started reading chapter books. (The Magic Tree House)

untitled

Both of the girls were able to pick out books. I really did try to keep them away from toys, but I will tell you that there were tons of interactive, educational, open ended play toys!  Perfect for Christmas.

One book Samantha was so excited to get was A Little Princess. We got this book for $3.99. Now that is an inexpensive Christmas gift!

(Don’t mind Sam’s face. We had just come from Disneyland where she had her face painted.)

Finding a toy or game that I played with? Now that was a challange. (When I was growing up we were lucking to have Black & White TV!) What I did find was Beckett, the Panda Bear. I think stuffed animals are always a good choice for children because they can be used for teaching sooo many things and they are soft, cuddly, and can be comforting/soothing.
    Thanks!

Well, when I was a kid I loved playing Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders and those teach great lessons in following directions, colors, shapes, and organizational skills. But, a game that I saw on the Borders website that I love and my kids and students alike love is Rush Hour and Rush Hour Jr. – that game is wicked fun and teaches kids the same lessons of following directions and colors and organization but it also teaches them to think outside of the box and problem solving. The kids love the game and I love watching them play. Thanks for the giveaway!

I have very fond memories of Legos! The ‘old’ kind – where you got a box of assorted blocks and stuff and had to (gasp) use your imagination (!) to make things! I think it would be great if today’s kids got sets of those Legos, instead of the kits where you just build the one thing, and follow the instructions and don’t have to imagine anything! Let’s get the kids THINKING and IMAGINING again!

I had a stuffed panda, but otherwise the toys on the Borders web site are “after my time.” I remember playing with Lincoln Logs. I wasn’t very good at “construction” but that wasn’t really the point. I think today’s kids would benefit from playing with toys like Lincoln Logs because they stretch a child’s imagination and creativity, and teach concepts like spacial orientation, patience, and delaying gratification, which in today’s “instant” world many children don’t develop fully.

This probably sounds silly, but a game I really liked was Careers. The way to win the game was to have enough of “everything”, and you had to make choices along the line to figure out which of those things were the most important to you. In this day and age of most Americans being deeply in debt, obviously, they aren’t teaching their kids about budgeting because they don’t know themselves. I think this would be a great game for today’s kids.

I played a lot of Monopoly as a kid and still play now. It is a good choice because it teaches about counting money and taking turns, etc

They have a matching game, which I LOVED. It’s a different version, but aren’t all matching games the same?!

I loved playing with puppets when I was a child. Had hours of entertainment. My friends and I would put on puppet shows. Border’s Paper Bag Puppets would be a great gift for children
