Borders *Giveaway*

On Sunday Hubby and I stopped off at Borders in Riverside CA to check out the toys and books for kids! After dealing with an unhappy rude manager we had our gift card and were on our way to check out the toys.

Borders has made finding the perfect toy or game easier for those looking for high-quality educational gifts. The bookseller recently expanded its toys & games selection in more than 500 stores.  Shelves are stocked with items from leading brands like Creativity for Kids, Thinkfun, Scientific Explorer, ALEX and Blue Orange Games. These brands are known for products that foster creativity and help to build cognitive skills in children.

I’d say the girls and I spent a good hour in the kid section. When you walk into it, it’s like it has it’s own room. Kids have their own place to sit, relax and enjoy reading.  As you cna see from the picture below the Borders near us has a wonderful selection of books and toys! When I told the girls we had $100 o spend on books they were ecstatic! Samantha is a great little reader. She is at level 18 right now and has just started reading chapter books. (The Magic Tree House)

untitled

Both of the girls were able to pick out books. I really did try to keep them away from toys, but I will tell you that there were tons of interactive, educational, open ended play toys!  Perfect for Christmas.

One book Samantha was so excited to get was A Little Princess. We got this book for $3.99. Now that is an inexpensive Christmas gift!

(Don’t mind Sam’s face. We had just come from Disneyland where she had her face painted.)

I am so old that none of those toys were around when I was growing up except for a Pink Diary with Lock. Oh how I loved telling my diary everything and pouring out my heart to “it”. Funny thing is I still have it.

My 7 year old loves doing crafts and making things, and I think she’d love the “Make Your Own Sock Puppets” kit. It’d make a great gift for kids who love to make things, and the puppets are fun to play with once they’re made too!

  19. Grad School Mommy says:

I grew up in a family that played a lot of games, and my husband & I are encouraging our boys to do the same. We had everything from Sorry to Trouble to Monopoly…but my favorite were always the word/spelling games (like Boggle and Scrabble). Games are these are timeless to me — which is why we encourage the very same ones in our home now. We even manage to play Scrabble Junior with our kids by adapting it to “team play.” We’d LOVE to win this gift — because the only thing our family likes more than games are… BOOKS!!! :)

I loved playing memory as a kid, and S’match is the same type of game. But one of my sons, (and only one of the four),loves to read, so the best toy for him has always been books.

  23. luvtosave says:

Julius! Matching Game would be a good choice for kids today because it is educational. Helps improve memories. When I was young I loved to play matching games. I even made my own cards.

I remember play for hours with Lego. They are great for imagination and manual dexterity.

  26. Judith says:

I’ve spent hours at Borders over the past 3 weeks and I always end up in the board games section. It was my favorite past time as a child and now my own children love to play with my husband and I. Borders has become so good at offering the best board games today. My “go-to” game of my past is now the same today with my kids – “Yahtzee” and there is a new spin on it (as there always is) that has proven very fun called “Yahtzee Free for All,” which is the best spin yet. I also loved playing Win, Lose or Draw and Pictionary. Today there is one called “Luck of the Draw” that has quickly made it to our family’s favorite. There’s been no funner version of a drawing game in my 44 years of living.

Our family really enjoys fast paced, creative thinking games like Taboo (my fav) and Scattegories as well as card games. So I would immediately add to our collection the following board games we have been wanting: Pictureka; Quiddler; Beat the Parents; Catch Phrase; Buzz Words; Blokus and Flinch. I would also purchase the Lego Avent Calendar.

  27. Mami2jcn says:

I don’t remember playing with any of the new Borders games as a child, but I like Zingo and My First Science Kit. Zingo is similar to Bingo, which I definitely played as a child.

I don’t remember playing the games on their website, but one that jumps out in my memory is Memory. I always played it with my sisters. In such a heavily electronic world, I think it would be good for kids today just to keep their memories in top shape.

  41. Jackie says:

I love the Paper Bag Puppets Kit. We had so much for as kids making puppets out of brown lunch bags and putting on shows. I think it would make a great gift because so many kids rely on electronics for entertainment. This would allow them to be creative and use their imagination.

  42. dawn0124 says:

Borders has a Dinosaur Matching Game. I remember playing card matching games as a child. This is a good game for kids today because it builds memory skills, develops problem solving strategies, and enforces social interaction. In addition, during play children learn the names of dinosaurs.

I loved playing with Kirsten Mini Doll (American Girl). Except I have the full sized doll. I’m so sad that they will not be selling her anymore! :( At least they have the mini. :)

Why do kids today get into this doll, and all their others…because they are so pretty, full of history and have books that go along with them. Kirsten was the reason why I started enjoying reading bigger books. I didn’t want to make that transition because bigger book didn’t have pictures. Their books do, and have the dolls to go with. I love this particular doll because my Great Grandma came from Sweden.

  57. The game I remember playing with is a card game called Pit. It is an easy trading game with several suits of stock market commodities like corn, wheat, or barley. Each player starts with nine cards plus the bull (good) and the bear (bad). One player declares the market open, and then frenzied trading begins in groups of one, two, or three matching cards. Hang on to the wild bull card, secretly trade away the bear, wind up with all nine cards in your commodity and scream, “Pit!” So much fun! Best of all, the school where I work has this card game and I’m introducing it to a new generation.

I was always a little gamer from age 3 to, well, now – though not as much now. I feel that video games are great ways to build up coordination and quick thinking skills, which can be quite important for kids. Of course, it’s also important that the video games be appropriate like Mario Bros, Tetris and other puzzles, and so on (not to say that I didn’t dabble in more mature games when I was a child).

Clue! is always a ood game. I used to play it and it’s fun for kids today too because it lets them use their brains and powers of deduction.

Beckett the Panda Bear would be a great choice to kids to play with! I remember having a panda bear as a child. They are soft and cuddly. Just the friend a child needs.

Well, I was a child a LONG time ago, and I don’t see anything here that I played with as a child. However, I did have a doll similar to the Kaya Mini Doll (American Girl) that I played with a lot. Thanks for the chance to win!

Looking at the selection I realize that there are lot cooler toys than when I was little. The perfumery kit looks like something I would have liked. When I was a kid I would help my aunt mix essential oils to make her personal scent and she let me make my own.
