Back to School: Writing Fundamentals by Mead *Giveaway closed*
Many parents don’t realize handwriting development begins well before pencil hits paper. Activities that build eye-hand coordination, introduce pre-writing shapes and focus on multi-sensory skills lay the foundation for successful handwriting. Fittingly, that’s how this progressive line is structured.
Mead has new products to help children get ready for school, called Writing Fundamentals . Developed in conjunction with a pediatric occupational therapist who specializes in handwriting, the line is divided into four stages based on age and developmental skills. It begins with cutting activities, dot-to-dot projects and coloring exercises that begin eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills. Subsequent products/stages then focus on formal handwriting instruction, including letter formation through tracing and writing practice on paper with raised lines.
For Sarah we received:
• Dry Erase Activity Board – (Stages 1, 2, 3) - This activity board includes three double -sized, activity-driven dry erase boards spiral bound together for easy storage. Activities include capital and lowercase letter formation, number development, shape formation, simple addition and a draw-and-write space to spark creative writing and illustration.
We love using the Dry Erase Activity Board. Sarah gets to practice writing her ABC’s correctly, and she can practice not only her uppercase letters, but her lower case letters, and numbers. I know she needs lots more practice for school, but the board is a great way for her to practice. The nice sturdy board also allows for her to take it in the car and practice.
• 4-in-1 Learn to Letter with Guidelines- This workbook features four sections that build upon one another. Debossed capital and lowercase letter pages offer kids numbered steps and See & Feel™ grooves to master printing. A raised ruling section helps students learn to stay inside the lines. Finally, the plain primary ruled pages feature bold lines for accurate letter placement.
The Guidelines are awesome! I love that she can use a crayon and wipe it off when she is done. It’s great to be able to keep re-using things. Especially those that are for learning. The book starts with tracing each letter, and as you progress through the book it only shows one line for the letter, and eventually no lines and allows the child to practice their letters (with the Guidelines of course).
• Write-On, Wipe-Off Lowercase Letters - For use with dry erase markers and erasable crayons, these reusable workbooks offer a fun and rewarding way to practice lowercase letter formation on primary paper. Kids learn best from ongoing practice. Specific patterns for each letter are reinforced with pictures, colored steps and directional cues.
Another awesome product that allows you to wipe off your work and use it again. It’s great practice for kids from pre-school to first grade.
For Samantha we received:
• Primary Journal- Recognizing that students often need to illustrate journal entries, the Primary Journal has a unique format with lined paper on the bottom and a blank space for drawings, diagrams or calculations. An early creative story tablet, the product features primary ruling with red line cues to indicate the baseline.
Samantha loves this journal. She loves to write stories so being able to add pictures above her stories is neat to her!
• Write-On, Wipe-Off- Cursive Letters - For use with dry erase markers and erasable crayons, this reusable workbook offers a fun and rewarding way to practice cursive letter formation on primary paper. Kids learn best from ongoing practice. Specific patterns for each letter are reinforced with pictures, colored steps and directional cues.
All throughout first grade Samantha begged me to show her how to write in cursive. So when I saw the Write-on, Write-off Cursive Letters Workbook I knew this would be something she would love. and she does! This book is for 2nd grade and up and has given her a great start at learning cursive this coming year in school.

I like the Connect with Color because my daughter is in the pre-writing stages. She recognizes colors and shapes, so I think this one would be a good activity to prepare her for writing.
