According to Walmart’s “Class of 2012 Back-to-School Survey,” 76 percent of moms with children in kindergarten to 12th grade consider back-to-school a time for a fresh start over Jan. 1 and 61 percent of moms said they plan to get their families to eat healthier during the new school year. However, moms’ biggest challenge with getting their families to eat healthier during the school year is the cost of healthier foods.
Most of the time when making the girls school lunch we would just buy pre-packaged foods and throw it in the lunch box. Not a whole lot of thought and we definitely need to have a lot more healthier options.
As a former yard duty I also saw TONS of trash and wasted foods. Parents sending food that kids don’t eat or like. One little girl asked me to open up a whole package of tuna, she took a bite gave me a face and threw the entire thing away.
Bento Box Lunch styles are all the rave right now. As a parent you know how much your child will eat, so send them to school with food they like, and by putting items in containers help with trash issues. When the kids are done they just put their containers back into their lunch box and no mess. You as a parent get to see what they didn’t eat too.
In the photo above is a typical lunch I send to school with the girls. My kids will eat apples whole, but there are a lot of kids who wont.
