ABOUT KILZ CLEAN START

–       KILZ Clean Start primer is a zero VOC*, high performance interior/exterior water-based primer, sealer and stainblocker, and is perfect for at-home paint enthusiasts and professionals alike.

* (What’s a VOC? VOC stands for volatile organic compound – a gas or vapor emitted by various solids or liquids.)

–       The zero VOC and low-odor formula addresses concerns related to VOCs while delivering the quality performance expected from other KILZ brand primers.

–       Availability: KILZ Clean Start can be found at select retailers nationwide.

–       Pricing: Suggested pricing is between $21-$25/gallon depending on location

WHY PRIME

Prime every time for fewer top coats and better coverage and durability. Priming will give you a truer top coat color, better coverage and long-lasting finish. One coat of primer dries in less than an hour and allows for fewer top coats – saving you time and money down the road.

TIPS JUST FOR MOM

–       The 2009 KILZ brand Roller Report found that one in five moms spends more time and money on her child’s room than other areas of her home. Let your child’s creativity run wild by asking them to choose their own paint colors. Don’t be afraid if they choose bright pinks or greens – they can be easily covered with a high-quality primer as tastes change. Water-based paints and zero VOC products like KILZ Clean Start primer are a good choice for a child’s room.

WHAT YOUR DÉCOR SAYS ABOUT YOU

–       DIY Décor Trumps Diamonds. According to the 2009 KILZ Brand Roller Report most women (85 percent) would prefer a $5,000 room makeover versus an equally pricey pair of diamond stud earrings, and 88 percent of men would prefer a $5,000 deck or garage makeover versus a watch with the same price tag. You don’t need to spend a fortune to give your living space a facelift. Applying a fresh coat of primer and paint is the easiest way to transform a space with minimal time and money.

–       Ladies, Your Friends Have an Opinion About Your Home Décor. Fifty-one percent of women polled in the 2009 KILZ brand Roller Report dislike the décor in at least one room in their best friend’s home, but only 55 percent would tell them. Don’t let this deter you! Pick a design that reflects you and don’t be afraid to play with color and dramatic accents – they’ll make it feel more personal. Starting fresh with a coat of KILZ Clean Start primer means you can change colors until you find one that fits you best.

–       Make an Entrance. The entryway is your home’s first impression. Spark visitors’ imagination with beautiful flooring, unique art and warm, bright lighting. Tuck away shoes, umbrellas and coats, leaving only a vase of flowers on a table. The walls should complement the rest of your home and offer a preview of what’s to come. Avoid excessively bright colors, instead opting for a neutral hue that will tie your rooms together

–       Bright Walls Are a Buzz Kill for Men. Sixty-six percent of men say they prefer neutral walls to bolds in women’s’ homes, according to the 2009 KILZ brand Roller Report. Bold colors are a great way to express yourself, but they can be distracting to a suitor. Change walls to more appealing neutrals by starting with a high quality primer like KILZ Clean Start. Start with a neutral palette and introduce your own style through colorful accent pieces like paintings, area rugs, floral arrangements and candlesticks.

–       Quick Kitchen Updates. The kitchen is the most used, equipment-heavy and expensive-to-renovate room in the home, but it makes a huge impact on visitors. New appliances have the greatest impact on a kitchen but can be costly. If you want to make a change for a smaller investment, update cabinetry with fresh coats of KILZ Clean Start primer and paint. Add some new cabinet hardware to make your kitchen feel like new at a fraction of the cost.

We just bought a forclosure – a big one at that. Um… my fiance and I only own a bed, a desk and a tv that aren’t hand me downs. Everything else furniture wise was either found near our apartment dumpster or are hand me downs from when my fiance’s dad died and my fiance had to clean out his dad’s house. We are in dire need of a living or dining room!

You should really see our living room, no wait….you shouldn’t. We have blue at the bottom of the walls, yellow at the top-all the way up to cathedral ceilings and ugly flower border in between the colors. I was great when we did it, but so over it now-8 years later. We bought a nice brown couch about 3 years ago and have been saying we are going to paint ever since, but with two toddlers running around and me being a SAHM, there is just no time…or money!

My Master Bedroom could use a $500 makeover. Here are a few design ideas from Lisa Laporta and your chance to win a $500 room makeover from the KILZ® brand:

My master bedroom has suffered for over 6 years now. Unfortunately, when we moved in we put this room on the back burner. Which I am HIGHLY regretting now. I always hear people say that they master bedroom should be first on the list of rooms to complete. Well, we had great plans to do so, then we found out we were expecting baby number 1. And I was happy to put our bedroom on hold again. We worked so hard on baby no 1’s bedroom, and it is adorable. Then in no time flat, we found out baby no. 2 was coming to join our family…yet again we put our bedroom off (and happily). And about 4 weeks ago, I found out that baby no. 3 is coming to join our family. Yes, yet again we’re going to put off our bedroom (I will have three kids 3 and under…the 3 year old turning three just before the baby is born…hehe…yikes 🙂 So needless to say, our bedroom will hopefully be done after we settle in with baby three. A $500 gift card would sure be nice, and get us on a great bedroom makeover 🙂 However if I don’t win it, I hope some deserving mother wins and designs the room of her dreams…what an exciting contest. Thanks Kilz and Amanda!

We currently have a small kitchen and are a 5 person family. Our two babies (1 and 2) are small now but as they get older we know it will be difficult to manuever around in the kitchen and eat together as a family. Something we feel is important. My husband loves to cook and I would love to be able to make him the kitchen of his dreams and although I can’t do that w/ $500, I can make a head start and at least do some upgrades to make it bareable for our family.

I would probably start with the dining room and see if we could afford to add in more rooms as we went along. Even though the dining room has the darkest paint it’s room with the most scuffs and stains on the walls. I think the previous tenants must have had a food fight in there, because there are stains in places you’d never think possible. I have tried cleaning them, I’ve put furniture in front of some, hung pictures at odd heights- everything, but there’s no way I could get all of the marks, and because the paint is an eggshell, we’ve added our own scuffs to the mix, and it’s getting out of control.

Its impossible ugly. One wall has a horrific border on it, well some of its ripped down. Our 2 walls have cracks going down them from settling (probably more than $500 can handle but who knows). The carpet is mauve! haha yeah mauve like it was cool in the early 90’s mauve. It’s a big space and we don’t know what to do with it or how to fix it. Before I go I have to tell you about the TV hole. The previous owners cut holes in the walls for the TV and VCR to fit in!! It’s hideous. HELP!

We have ONE drawer in our entire kitchen! It’s beyond crazy! We keep our silverware holder tray in the pantry because the one drawer is filled with other things (electric beaters, measuring cups, other gadgets.) Our counterspace is also minimal — so minimal that I sometimes open the dishwasher door so I could use it as a shelf when it’s all open as if to load the dishwasher! And if the dishwasher itself is empty, I will often pull out the top shelf and use THAT as a place to store things while I am cooking or baking. Like I said, crazy!

Our son moved out in Febuary of this year & it has been in desperate need of help since then. He was not a very neat(putting it extremely mildly) person & had 2 ferrets living up there also, who ran free most of the time. He is a smoker so between smoke smell, ferret messes & who know what other horrors it holds in the floor & walls. I have managed to fumigate enough to get the carpeting out but can’t stay in long enough to clean up much. We can’t afford to hire anyone & we are renters of 21 years so we do have to fix it sometime. We now watch his girlfriends son overnight & would like to fix that room for health reasons & need. Thanks for having this contest to help someone in these tough times, even if I don’t win I think it’s great.
